Finding Peace in the Midst of Chaos: How Yogic Teachings Remind Us That This Too Shall Pass

The relentless stream of inflammatory, shocking, and scandalous headlines coming at us from seemingly every direction is draining. It gnaws at our nervous system and gradually weakens our immune systems. Our minds envision disasters lurking around every corner. This mindset is not only anxiety-inducing and mentally draining, but also entirely futile.

I've been away from home for a little more than a week now, enjoying the Caribbean's intense sun and steady trade winds. I've reduced my social media usage, opting instead to delve deep into meditation, yoga and buddhist philosophy. Relaxing by the pool or beach, I've delighted in reading David Michie's novels, which are light-hearted yet deeply spiritual. His series about the Dalai Lama's cat is particularly enjoyable. As someone who loves yoga and cats, I find these books both amusing and enlightening.

HHC (His Holiness' Cat) is an astute observer of life. As she transforms from a small, disheveled kitten on the streets of New Delhi into the cherished and esteemed household pet of the Dalai Lama, she absorbs (and imparts) essential spiritual teachings. Releasing attachments to results, embracing kindness, and discovering peace in the present moment are among the philosophical insights she reveals.

While reading about HHC's antics, I am reminded of many foundational teachings. Primarily that I cannot control the future. That the past is behind me, and I am unaware of what lies ahead. I remember that right now, at this present moment, everything is just fine. In fact, at this very moment, everything is good, very good, and even wonderful. When I permit myself to dwell, focus, and rest in this moment, I find peace. There is no worry or trouble, only calmness and tranquility.

Releasing concerns about what others are saying, thinking, or doing helps me distance myself from fear, worry, anxiety, and stress. By approaching my daily life with ease and embracing intentional breathing and body awareness, I feel a sense of peace and tranquility. I am reminded that I cannot control what others do or say, but I can control my own actions. It takes practice, and I need to continually bring myself back to awareness. Yet, every time I succeed, I gain a refreshed sense of peace.

Birth, life, death, and rebirth form the cycle of nature. Nothing is permanent. Change is inevitable. We can find solace in this understanding. "This too shall pass". Even if we dislike much of what we encounter on social media and news platforms, we can find comfort in knowing that nothing lasts forever. Change is constant. The past is beyond our control, and the future is unknown. Speculation may not benefit us. What we have is the present moment. So breathe and feel. Choose the life you desire. Set intentions for yourself. Decide how you want to live and the kind of person you want to be. Kindness matters. Compassion for self and others matter. Each of us has the power to approach daily life with kindness, and to share peace and light in the world. Take charge of your life.

Sending love and light to all,

Laura ✨🙏🏻
